Nelson Githinji

Githinji_120x120A Kenyan by birth, Nelson Githinji, CBS, MBS, is the Secretary of Cooperatives in the Ministry of Industrialization & Enterprise Development. He joined the public service in 2009 by invitation into the prestigious role of Comptroller of State House; an accounting and overall administrative responsibility similar to that of Chief of Staff to the 3rd President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. former President Mwai Kibaki. After 2 years, he moved to the docket of Tourism as Secretary before assuming the current role just over 12 months ago.
A veterinary surgeon by training, Dr. Githinji prior to joining the public service enjoyed a sterling career spanning 19 years in the private sector in various leadership roles in Sales & Marketing, Government relations, Public Policy, Public Affairs and Community relations in Coca-Cola Africa as well as in GlaxoSmithKline.
He was the first Kenyan to dock into and camp in the Antarctic Peninsula while on an Environmental awareness voyage with 46 other colleagues from Coca-Cola when he served in the Public Affairs portfolio in 2003.
Dr Githinji was involved in leading business associations while in the private sector and served as President of American Chamber of Commerce in KENYA, member of the Advisory Board of Junior Achievement Kenya, Director of Federation of Kenya Employers (F.K.E), NPC Karen & Parklands, Board member of Inter University Council of East Africa, Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA); and East African Business Council. He also is a past member by invitation of the Presidential Investors’ Round Table (P.I.R.T.) for Uganda & Presidential International Investors’ RoundTable in Tanzania.
He is the Chairman of the Advisory Board of Sunrise Children’s Garden School, a school which he jointly owns with his wife for the last 20 years, & also is also a Board Director of Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC). He is currently steering the Ease of Doing Business Workstream in the Kenya Government.
He was decorated with the Moran of the order of the Burning Spear (MBS) in December 2008 by His Excellency the President Hon. Mwai Kibaki for outstanding leadership in the private sector. In 2010, he was further recognized for outstanding service to the Nation with the decoration of Chief / Commander of the order of the Burning Spear (CBS).
